About Us
Advanced Feed grew out of a desire from John and David Wright to further process the grain they were growing on their farming properties and to utilise waste material from their seed cleaning plant. A computer controlled milling plant from the USA was imported allowing the plant to operate virtually automatically.
During 2001 approximately 1000 tonnes of feed was manufactured; this has grown to annual turnover of 28000 tonnes produced in 2008. Since the initial set up of the company and manufacturing plant many changes have taken place. Advanced Feed is now owned by Gardner Smith NZ Ltd & Local Investors. Gardner Smith is an Australian based group supplying a range of products and services to the agricultural, food, energy and manufacturing sectors. Since 2001 several upgrades have been made to the plant including a new pelletiser, new roller and hammer mills, new office block, grain loop installation, new “just in time” milling and blending plant set up.
Blending Plant
The blending plant is a recent addition to the equipment Advanced Feed uses in manufacturing its quality range of stock feed. Called “just in time” milling, the plant has been installed to meet our existing clients’ requirements to have large volumes of rolled grains blended with proteins and minerals. The plant equipment includes: double roller mill, hammer mill, double paddle mixer, and are all capable of handling 20 tonnes per hour. Utilising computer controlled equipment, the plant is capable of manufacturing blends - sometimes of up to eight ingredients - at the rate of 20 tonnes per hour, meaning Advanced Feed can supply a 30 tonne unit load of quality dairy feed in an hour and a half or “Just in Time”.
- The computer controlled weighing system incorporated in the manufacturing process ensures the accuracy of each ingredient time after time
- The use of industrial roller mills to ensure grains are cracked ready for livestock consumption
- Ability to utilise many different ingredients to meet individual farmer requirements
- “Just in time” milling means very quick turnaround from order to delivery
- Utilising a professional animal nutritionist for formulating diets
- Buy from the manufacturer
Pelletising
The pelletising plant incorporates the use of computer controlled milling and mixing techniques. The double ribbon mixer is mounted on load cells that are linked to the computer system. Professional animal nutritionists prepare our formulae which are entered into the computer system. The computer system controls the appropriate auger to bring the correct amount of each ingredient into the mixer for each formula. The system also includes a micro ingredient stand. This is a series of hoppers which hold the micro ingredients such as minerals, pre mixes, etc. It has its own weighing system and allows the inclusion of these micro ingredients at very fine tolerances of down to 10 grams per tonne. During the pelletising process the meal is steam conditioned prior to pelletising to enhance the finished pellets. The steam conditioning process increases the availability of starches in the grain and therefore makes it easier for the stock to digest. This results in the finished pelletised feeds typically having ME (Metabolisable Energy) levels in the 13 – 14 mj (mega joules) range.
